Veniard Peacock Sword Tails Pack of 2
Veniard Peacock Sword Tails are striking, naturally curved feathers taken from the side of the peacock's tail train, essential for creating the iridescent green wings of the
Alexandra
wet fly and the durable, flashy tails of the
Zug Bug
nymph. Unlike the "Eye" feathers which provide soft herl for wrapping bodies, Sword feathers feature a stiff stem and shorter, sword-shaped fibers that hold their profile in the water, adding a distinct metallic green-blue sheen to classic patterns.
Material Profile
Sword vs. Herl (The Eye)
It is critical to distinguish "Swords" from the standard "Peacock Eye" or "Herl."
The Sword Tail (Rigid)
These feathers are naturally curved (crescent shape) with shorter, stiffer fibers. They are
NOT
used for wrapping bodies because the fibers are too short and the stem is too stiff. They are exclusively for
Wings, Tails, and Cheeks
.
The Peacock Eye (Soft)
The "Eye" provides the long, soft, bushy herl used for wrapping the thorax of a Prince Nymph or body of a Griffiths Gnat. If a pattern calls for "wrapping," you need an Eye, not a Sword.
Primary Applications
1. Wet Fly Wings (The Alexandra)
The most famous application for Veniard Sword Tails is the
Alexandra
, a classic British wet fly known as the "Lady of the Lake." The natural curve of the sword feather is tied in as a "roof" over the back of the fly. The stiffness of the sword fibers prevents them from collapsing in the current, maintaining the fly's fish-like silhouette.
Nymph Tails (The Zug Bug)
For the
Zug Bug
and similar attractors, sword fibers are the standard tailing material.
Durability:
The fibers are significantly more durable than standard marabou or soft hackle.
Flash:
They provide a trigger point of natural metallic green that mimics the shimmering case of a caddis or shuck of a mayfly.
Technique:
Tie in a small bunch (3-5 fibers) at the bend. The natural curve can be positioned to flair slightly, adding movement.
