Butt Monkey
The
Butt Monkey fly
is a renowned, effective streamer pattern used in fly fishing for catching large predatory fish, including
trout (especially trophy brown and bull trout), bass, pike, and musky
.
Key Features and Use
Origin:
The original pattern was designed by Scott Smith and Bob Linsenman for large brook trout in Ontario, Canada. It was later popularized and adapted by the famous angler and fly tyer Kelly Galloup, who introduced articulated versions and variations with lead eyes.
Purpose:
The fly is designed to imitate wounded baitfish, sculpins, or crayfish. Its large, bulky head (often made of wool or spun deer hair) pushes a significant amount of water, creating an action and profile that attracts aggressive strikes from large fish.
Design:
Modern versions are typically articulated (jointed) to provide a lifelike, erratic swimming action in the water. The fly commonly features a marabou tail, cactus chenille body, and magnum rabbit strips for added movement and flash.
Fishing Technique:
It is typically fished using a strip retrieve with varying speeds and pauses to mimic a fleeing or wounded baitfish. It can also be dead-drifted in deep pools or near structure like submerged logs and rocks where large fish ambush prey.
Colors:
The Butt Monkey is tied in various colors, with popular options including black, olive, rust, white, grey, and tan, allowing for versatility in different water conditions (clear or stained).
