Daddy Long Leg
The
"Daddy Long Legs" fly
is a highly effective
terrestrial dry fly pattern
used in fly fishing to imitate adult
crane flies
. Trout and other fish species find them an attractive and substantial meal, especially when natural crane flies are active and get blown onto the water's surface.
Key Information for Anglers
What it imitates
: The adult crane fly, a gangly, long-legged insect.
Target Species
: Primarily trout, but also effective for salmon and panfish in freshwater environments.
Best Time to Use
: Most effective during
late summer through autumn
(August-October) when the natural insects are most plentiful. They can work throughout the day but are often more productive in the afternoon and evening.
Effective Conditions
: Particularly good on
windy or rainy days
when natural crane flies are forced onto the water.
Fishing Techniques
:
Dry Fly (Surface)
: The most common method. Cast the fly out on a floating line and let it drift naturally. Occasional, small twitches can imitate a struggling insect.
Subsurface
: If fish are not taking the fly on the surface, it can be fished just under the surface using a slow sinking line or by adding a bead to the fly. This imitates drowned or struggling insects.
"Washing Line"
: A popular technique involves using a large, buoyant Daddy Long Legs pattern on the point of a leader with smaller nymph or "hopper" patterns on droppers, allowing the droppers to sit just below the surface.
Stalking
: Goldhead versions are effective for stalking fish in smaller stillwaters, getting down quickly to the fish's depth.
Fly Pattern Details
Materials
: Typically tied with a buoyant body (foam or deer hair), long, spindly legs (often rubber or knotted pheasant tail fibers), and sometimes a wing made of hackle feathers or synthetic fibers.
Size/Colors
: Available in various sizes, commonly size 8 to 16 hooks. Popular colors include tan, orange, brown, and natural.
Presentation
: Due to its size and wind resistance, it is often best fished on a slightly heavier leader (e.g., 6lb-8lb monofilament or fluorocarbon).
The Daddy Long Legs fly is a versatile and exciting pattern that can lead to very aggressive strikes from fish due to the substantial meal it represents.
