Bird Of Prey

Bird Of Prey

The Beadhead Bird of Prey is a popular and effective nymph pattern, primarily used to imitate caddis pupae and emergers. It is a versatile "searching" fly that catches both trout and steelhead.

Key Features
  • Imitation: It is designed to represent the vulnerable caddis pupa as it rises to the surface to hatch. The bead provides weight to get the fly down in the water column quickly.
  • Effectiveness: It is considered a staple in many anglers' fly boxes and is effective year-round, particularly during caddis hatches.
  • Versatility: The pattern can be tied in different colors (olive, tan, brown, black, orange) and sizes to match various caddisfly species or other aquatic insects. The October Caddis variation, tied with an orange body, is particularly effective in the fall.
  • Materials: Common materials often include a bead head (typically gold or black tungsten), a curved shank or emerger hook, partridge hackle for legs, peacock herl for the thorax, and natural hare's mask dubbing or other synthetic dubbing for the body.
Tying Recipe (Common Variation)
A general recipe for the fly includes:
  • Hook: 2X-short emerger hook (e.g., Dai-Riki 125)
  • Bead: Gold or tungsten bead sized to the hook
  • Thread: 8/0 or 70 Denier (color to match variation)
  • Rib: Small Pearl Flashabou or gold wire
  • Tail: Natural Hungarian Partridge fibers (some variations do not have a tail)
  • Body: Hare's mask or synthetic dubbing (olive, tan, orange, etc.)
  • Hackle/Legs: Light Partridge feather
  • Thorax (optional): Peacock herl behind the bead
The "Beadhead Bird of Prey" is a reliable pattern for when fish are keying in on subsurface food sources.
