Black Ghost
The
Black Ghost fly
is a renowned, classic streamer pattern in fly fishing, highly regarded for its effectiveness in imitating various baitfish. Developed by the legendary Maine guide Herbert "Herb" Welch in the 1920s, it has become a staple in fly boxes for anglers targeting a variety of predatory fish in both freshwater and saltwater.
Key Characteristics
Type:
Streamer fly pattern (imitates baitfish).
Appearance:
The fly has a black body (usually floss or chenille) with a silver ribbed wrapping, contrasted by a bright yellow tail and a large white wing (originally feather, but also tied with marabou or bucktail variations).
Action:
The flowing wing materials give the fly a lifelike, "snakey" movement in the water, which entices aggressive strikes from predatory fish.
Effectiveness:
It is especially effective in low-light conditions, such as early morning, evening, at night, or in stained/off-colored water, where the strong silhouette is highly visible.
Target Species
The Black Ghost's versatility makes it effective for a wide range of fish, including:
Trout:
Particularly large brook trout, lake trout, and brown trout.
Salmon:
Excellent for landlocked Atlantic salmon and sea-run salmon.
Bass:
Both largemouth and smallmouth bass readily strike this pattern.
Pike/Pickerel:
The streamer-like appearance makes it an appealing meal for pike and pickerel.
Saltwater:
In saltwater environments, it can attract species such as striped bass and bluefish.
Fishing Tips
The Black Ghost can be fished in various ways depending on the conditions and target species:
Swinging:
Swinging the fly across the current is a classic method, especially for salmon and steelhead.
Stripping:
Short, erratic strips can imitate an injured or fleeing baitfish.
Trolling/Dead-drifting:
It can also be trolled from a boat in lakes and ponds or dead-drifted through deep pools where large fish lay in ambush.
The Black Ghost is a timeless, reliable pattern that every angler should consider having in their fly box.
