Black Pennell

Black Pennell

The Black Pennell is a classic and highly versatile wet fly pattern effective for catching trout (both rainbow and brown), sea trout, grayling, and even occasionally salmon and panfish. It is considered a must-have in an angler's fly box due to its consistent performance in various water conditions and throughout the fishing season.

Fly Description
The Black Pennell is a wet hackled fly with a dark, sleek appearance. Its typical materials include:
  • Hook: Standard wet fly hook (sizes 10-16 are common).
  • Tail: Golden pheasant tippet.
  • Body: Black floss, silk, or thread, often with a silver ribbing of wire or tinsel for added flash.
  • Hackle: Soft black hen hackle, which creates a lifelike movement in the water, mimicking an emerging or drowned aquatic insect.
Fishing Techniques
The Black Pennell can be fished in both still and running waters and is most effective when used as a wet fly.
  • Loch/Stillwater Fishing: It is very popular for traditional "loch style" fishing, often as part of a team of flies, where it is retrieved slowly with occasional twitches to imitate a struggling insect.
  • River Fishing: It can also be fished in rivers, particularly in the spring and autumn months, across the current and allowed to drift naturally.
  • Depth: It can be fished near the surface, or weighted versions (e.g., with a tungsten bead head) can be used on the point of a multiple-fly rig to fish deeper.
  • Conditions: It performs well in overcast conditions and is particularly good early in the season when black midges (buzzers) are hatching.
What it Imitates
The fly is believed to generally imitate a drowned adult insect or an emerging aquatic insect, such as a caddisfly or mayfly pupa, which are vulnerable and easy targets for fish. The simple, dark profile and subtle movement of the hackle make it a highly effective "trigger" pattern.
