Blue Gill Spider

Blue Gill Spider

The Bluegill Spider  is a highly effective, weighted, subsurface attractor-style fly pattern designed specifically for catching bluegill, panfish, and bass. Its main characteristic is the use of rubber legs that wiggle enticingly as the fly sinks, mimicking the lifelike action of an insect.

Key Features
  • Subsurface Action: The fly is weighted toward the bend of the hook with lead wire, which causes it to sink vertically and at a 45-degree angle, driving bluegill crazy.
  • Lifelike Movement: The primary attraction is the set of round rubber legs that constantly flutter and move underwater, triggering aggressive strikes from fish.
  • Simple and Durable Design: The pattern is easy to tie, typically consisting of only a few materials: a hook, thread, lead weight, chenille body, and rubber legs, often sealed with UV resin or head cement for durability.
  • Versatility: While designed for bluegill, the fly is also effective for other species like bass and crappie. It is a reliable pattern in various water conditions and throughout different seasons.
Fishing Techniques
  • Indicator/Dropper Rig: The Bluegill Spider works exceptionally well as a "dropper" fly beneath a larger surface fly or a strike indicator. The top fly creates surface disturbance, drawing attention, while the Spider sits in the bluegill's preferred feeding zone below.
  • Slow Sinking: The fly's design means it sinks slowly. Bluegill often take the fly as it is falling, so paying close attention to your line is crucial for detecting subtle takes.
  • Vertical Jigging: It can be effective to vertically jig the fly, especially around cover like dock pilings or submerged structures.
  • Targeting Spawning Beds: During the spring spawning season, casting the fly to the edge of visible bluegill beds and letting it sink can provoke aggressive, territorial strikes.
Popular Colors and Sizes
The most popular color is chartreuse, but black, olive, yellow, and brown variations are also common. The fly is typically tied on hook sizes #8, #10, or #12.
Overall, the Bully Bluegill Spider is a staple attractor pattern for panfish anglers, highly regarded for its simplicity and consistent effectiveness.
