CDC Midge Wing Emerger
The
CDC Midge Wing Emerger
is an effective fly pattern for trout, designed to imitate a midge pupa as it struggles to emerge through the surface film. It uses CDC (cul-de-canard) feathers for natural buoyancy and a realistic "trapped air bubble" look.
Fishing the Fly
The CDC Midge Wing Emerger can be fished in several ways to mimic the natural insect's behavior:
On the Surface (Dry Fly):
Apply a CDC-friendly floatant to the CDC wing to keep the fly in the surface film where trout often feed heavily on emerging midges. This works well when fish are actively rising.
Just Below the Surface:
Fish the fly without floatant to let it sink just beneath the meniscus. The CDC will trap small air bubbles, which is a significant trigger for trout.
Dry-Dropper Rig:
Attach the emerger as a dropper (9 to 14 inches) behind a larger, more visible dry fly (e.g., a Parachute Adams or Royal Wulff). The dry fly acts as an indicator, and often the trout will take the dropper.
Nymphing Rig:
Use the emerger as a dropper below a heavier nymph (like a tungsten bead-head hare's ear) when targeting fish feeding lower in the water column.
Key Tips:
Use a long, fine leader and tippet (5x to 7x) for a natural presentation, as trout in slow-moving midge water can be very selective.
Look for a "strike zone" or any subtle surface disturbance rather than trying to track the tiny fly itself.
When a fish rises near your fly, wait a brief moment before setting the hook to ensure the fish has the small fly fully in its mouth.
Midges hatch year-round, making this a valuable pattern, especially in the winter and on tailwaters.
