Near Nuff Crayfish
The
Near Nuff Crayfish fly
is highly effective for catching a wide range of fish species in rivers, streams, and lakes that have a crayfish population, including
smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, trout (especially brown trout), carp, catfish, sunfish/panfish, and pike
.
Fishing Locations
You can use this fly in any local waters (ponds, creeks, rivers) where crayfish are a forage base for the local fish population.
Rivers and Streams:
Focus on rocky bottoms, runs, and areas with structure or submerged debris, as crayfish hide and forage in these spots. Tailwaters, such as the Brookville tailwater in Indiana, which supports a year-round trout population, are also excellent options.
Lakes and Ponds:
Fish the fly near shorelines with rocky outcrops or vegetation. Areas with a defined riffle plunging into a deep, boulder-studded run are prime spots.
Specific Indiana Locations:
The
White River
(especially the lower section for bass and catfish) and
Griffy Lake Nature Preserve
are local spots in Indiana that hold the types of fish that eat crayfish. You might also check with local fly shops like
Moving Water Outfitters
in Zionsville for specific, up-to-date advice on local hotspots and conditions.
Fishing Techniques
Bottom Bouncing:
Crayfish live on the bottom, so keep your fly close to the substrate.
Strip-Pause Retrieve:
This mimics the natural backward "escape" motion of a crayfish. Allow the fly to sink to the bottom, then use short, quick strips with pauses in between.
Dead Drifting:
In current, a dead drift near the bottom can be effective, especially through the head of a pool or run.
Color and Size:
Use colors that match the local crayfish (olive, brown, tan, orange). Lighter colors can imitate vulnerable soft-shell or molting crayfish, which fish find particularly appealing. Vary the size; smaller sizes (size 8 or 10) are often effective for a wider range of fish, while larger fish will sometimes attack bigger patterns.
Snag Proof:
The fly pattern is often designed to be snag-proof, which is ideal for fishing along the bottom around rocks and structure.
By targeting these species and locations with the recommended techniques, the Near Nuff Crayfish can be a highly productive fly in your arsenal.
