Flymph BWO
The
Flymph BWO
is an effective
emerger
fly pattern used in fly fishing to imitate the transition stage of a Blue Wing Olive (BWO) mayfly as it rises through the water column to the surface. It is primarily a
wet fly
designed to catch trout and salmon, especially when the fish are feeding just below the surface during a BWO hatch.
Key Characteristics and Use
Imitation:
It mimics an emerging mayfly dun breaking out of its nymphal shuck.
Appearance:
It is typically a wingless soft hackle fly with a translucent body (often olive) and a soft hackle collar that provides a buggy profile and movement in the water. Many modern versions also feature a bead head to help them sink.
Fishing Technique:
The standard method associated with "flymph" fishing is the "Leisenring Lift". This involves casting the fly upstream or up and across the current, letting it sink, and then following the drift with the rod tip while keeping slack out of the line. As the fly rises in the current at the end of the drift, it mimics the natural movement of an emerging insect, often triggering a strike. It can also be fished on a standard downstream swing.
When to Use:
The Flymph BWO is particularly effective during strong BWO hatches, which typically occur in the spring and fall, especially on overcast or rainy days when the duns struggle to dry their wings and remain in the emerger stage longer.
Target Fish:
Trout are the primary target, as they consume mayfly nymphs and emergers frequently
