Foam Spider

Foam Spider

The Foam Spider fly is a highly effective, high-floating topwater fishing pattern, particularly popular for catching panfish (bluegill, bream, sunfish), small bass, and trout. Its primary advantage is its durability and natural buoyancy (it requires no floatant), making it a low-maintenance, productive fly for surface action.
Key Features & Applications
  • Target Species: Excellent for warm water species like bluegill, crappie, and various panfish. It also attracts small bass and can be used as a terrestrial pattern for trout.
  • Fishing Style: It is a dry, topwater fly.
  • Buoyancy and Durability: Made from closed-cell foam, it floats exceptionally well and withstands many aggressive strikes, outlasting many traditional feather or hair-based patterns.
  • Visibility: Often tied with bright colors on top (like yellow or chartreuse) to make it highly visible to the angler, while presenting a more natural silhouette (like black or brown) to the fish from below.
Fishing Techniques
  • Topwater Presentation: Cast the fly out and let it sit on the surface. Occasional subtle twitches or a slow drag can entice strikes.
  • As a Dropper Indicator: Due to its excellent buoyancy, the foam spider can serve as a "bobber" or indicator for a second, subsurface fly (e.g., a nymph or a wet fly) tied on a dropper line 12 to 18 inches below it. This allows you to fish two different depths and patterns simultaneously, often resulting in the dropper fly getting hit.
  • Versatility: It can be fished in various water bodies, including ponds, lakes, and streams.
Tying Materials
Foam spider flies are relatively simple to tie, making them a good option for beginners. Common materials include:
  • Hook: A standard dry fly or bass bug hook (sizes 8-14 are common).
  • Body: Pre-cut foam spider bodies or sheets of closed-cell foam (often 2mm thick).
  • Legs: Round rubber or silicone legs, which provide enticing movement.
  • Thread: Standard fly tying thread.
  • Optional: Flash or antron fibers for a wing, or permanent markers to color white foam bodies.
Overall, the foam spider is a reliable and enjoyable fly to use for consistent, exciting topwater action.
