Hot Spot StoneFly

Hot Spot StoneFly

The Hot Spot Stonefly is a popular fly fishing lure (an attractor pattern), not a specific species of natural insect. It's a variation of a standard stonefly nymph imitation that features a bright, often fluorescent, "hot spot" (usually in orange, pink, or chartreuse) in the thorax or tail section to trigger aggressive strikes from fish.
Key Features for Fishing
  • Attractor Pattern: The bright spot acts as a visual trigger, making the fly more noticeable in the water, especially in low visibility conditions (dirty water, deep water, or low light).
  • Effective Year-Round: While stoneflies naturally hatch at specific times of the year, their nymphs are a constant large food source for trout, meaning "hot spot" imitations can be effective all year. They are particularly useful during early-season runoff and in winter tailwaters.
  • Sinks Quickly: These flies are often weighted (often with a tungsten bead head) to get down to the bottom quickly, where natural stonefly nymphs reside. This makes them excellent as an "anchor fly" in a multi-fly nymphing rig.
  • Target Fish: It is a favorite pattern for catching trout and steelhead.
  • Versatile Rigs: It works well for various nymphing techniques including Euro nymphing, tight-line setups, or traditional indicator rigs.
Best Conditions to Use
  • Cold or High-Pressure Water: The hot spot can entice fish that are otherwise lethargic or selective.
  • Fast or Deep Water: The weight helps the fly reach the strike zone quickly in swift currents.
  • Periods of High Stonefly Activity: While effective year-round, they are especially deadly when natural stoneflies are active, such as during the peak of the salmonfly or golden stonefly hatches.
In essence, the Hot Spot Stonefly fly pattern combines the natural profile of a high-protein food source (a stonefly nymph) with a bold, unnatural color element designed to provoke a reaction bite.
