Spring Wiggler

Spring Wiggler

The Spring Wiggler (also known as the Spring's Wiggler or Michigan Wriggler) is an effective, classic fly pattern primarily known for catching Steelhead in the Great Lakes region. It is a versatile nymph pattern that also proves effective for targeting various trout species (rainbow, brown, brook), salmon, bass, and panfish.

Fly Description and Imitation
The Spring Wiggler is designed to imitate large aquatic insects, most notably damsel and dragonfly nymphs, or simply "wigglers," which are a key food source for many fish. The fly's design, often incorporating materials like marabou and nymph skin, gives it a characteristic "wiggling" action in the water that mimics the movement of live prey.
It can be tied in a variety of colors, with popular options including:
  • Brown
  • Olive
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Black
  • Chartreuse
Fishing Techniques
The Spring Wiggler pattern is versatile in its application:
  • Dead drifting (with or without an indicator) is a common and effective method.
  • Swinging or stripping the fly can also be productive, depending on water conditions.
Anglers often use it during spring when fish become more active and large insect hatches occur, but it remains a reliable pattern year-round.

Tying the Fly
Tying the fly typically involves materials such as a stout hook (sizes 6-10 are common), bead chain or mono eyes, chenille, hackle, and squirrel tail fibers or nymph skin for the body and tail. The tying process emphasizes creating a durable and active presentation in the water.
The Spring Wiggler is considered a staple pattern in many anglers' fly boxes due to its proven track record and effectiveness across different species and water conditions.
