Veniard Schlappen

Veniard schlappen feathers are a premium fly-tying material, prized for their long, wide, and webby fibers that impart exceptional lifelike movement in the water, making them a staple for large streamer, salmon, and saltwater patterns.

Key Features and Uses

Exceptional Movement: The soft, highly flexible, and webby structure of the feathers reacts to the slightest current, creating a natural, flowing action that attracts predatory fish.
Source and Quality: These feathers are quality-selected hackles that come from the specific area between the saddle and tail of a rooster, known for producing long (typically 10-20 cm), wide, and highly mobile fibers.
Versatile Applications: Veniard Schlappen are a versatile material used across many different fly patterns:
- Tails: Commonly used as long tails on various large flies, including pike and saltwater patterns.
- Collars/Hackles: Ideal for wrapping as soft hackles, collars, or beards on streamers, leeches, and wet flies.
- Bodies: They can be used to build the body of flies, such as feathered Game Changers.
Durability: These feathers are durable and designed for use in both freshwater and saltwater environments, proving effective for species like pike, muskie, salmon, steelhead, and tarpon.
Vibrant Colors: Veniard offers their schlappen in a wide range of dyed, vibrant colors, allowing tyers to match various natural baitfish or create high-visibility "trigger point" patterns.
