Veniard Turkey Biots
Veniard Turkey Biots are extra-long, stiff fibers stripped from the leading edge of a turkey's primary flight feather, primarily used to create realistic, segmented bodies on dry flies, nymphs, and emergers . Distinguished by their length and translucency, they are significantly longer than goose biots, allowing them to cover the shanks of larger hooks (sizes 12–14+) while maintaining a durable, tapered profile
Turkey vs. Goose Biots
The distinction between Turkey and Goose biots is critical for selecting the right material for the hook size and application
Feature
Turkey Biot (Veniard)
Goose Biot
Length
Long, suitable for bodies on #12-16 hooks
Short, best for tails or #18-22 bodies
Texture
Softer, more translucent
Stiffer, opaque, sharp edges
Best For
Wrapped Bodies, Wingcases
Tails, Antennae, Micro-Midges
Key Applications
Segmented Bodies
The primary use for Veniard biots is wrapping bodies ("wrapping the shank"). When wrapped, the natural ridge of the fiber creates a distinct, rib-like segmentation that mimics the abdomen of mayflies and stoneflies
.
Smooth Body:
Tie in with the transparent notch facing
down
(against the shank) for a smooth, tapered body.
Ribbed Body:
Tie in with the notch facing
up
(away from the shank) to flare the ridge, creating a raised rib effect
Available Colors
Veniard offers a wide spectrum of dyed colors to "match the hatch," specifically for imitating mayfly duns and spinners
.
Naturals:
White, Tan, Mahogany Brown, Rusty Brown, Olive, Black.
Attractors:
Sulphur Orange, Sulphur Yellow, Hendrickson Pink, Fluorescent Chartreuse, Red.
